Historical Overview

The Dept. of Physics, started functioning in 1982 with Prof. George Varghese as the Head of the Department. Since inception the department has been credited for providing quality education in the field of Physical sciences. As of now, the department trains 38 students at the undergraduate level each year. After 23 long years of consistent performance the Department was upgraded to PG Department in the year 2005 with an intake of 12 students every year for MSc course.


 

Facilities and Features

The Department has well established lab facilities, smart classrooms, a conference room with Projector, Smart board and a modern library displaying most of the books prescribed for the course. The library also subscribes some of the popular science journals for updating the current knowledge in the day to day developments of the scientific community. Moreover, there is a well-equipped project room with facilities like Scintillation counter, gamma ray spectroscope, optical fiber apparatus and crystal growth facilities for carrying out scientific projects in the Post graduate level. The faculty members of the department have noteworthy publications in National & International journals. The major areas of focus for research are Atmospheric Physics, Astrophysics and space science and Material Sciences. The faculty members have completed research projects from UGC in various years. The department also has a high power telescope for conducting sky watching sessions which is maintained by the Astronomy Club of the department

Achievements

Students from the department perform well in university examinations and the Dept produced 4th rank and 1st rank in UG level in the year 2008 and 2009 respectively.
