Historical Overview

Ever since the birth of St Xavier’s College, Hindi was taught as a second language. Prof. Joseph Thomas Vadackal was the first teacher of Hindi at St. Xavier’s College.  Later, Sri. P.M Varghese & Dr. C. Chandralekha Devi joined the Department. Since then, the Department was handling only additional language classes for pre-degree and degree students. But in the year 2002, our college had the opportunity to offer a UGC sponsored Three Main Vocational Degree course in Functional Hindi. We were lucky to initiate and complete the tenure of this course as UGC had sanctioned Functional Hindi to only two Colleges in Kerala – St Xavier’s College Thumba and the other being S.N College, Varkala. As a member of the Pass Board in Hindi, Dr S. Surendran Nair, Head of the Department, had prepared the syllabus and course regulations for Functional Hindi course and later he functioned as the course director of the programme during the entire tenure starting from 2002 to 2007.

 

Academic Achievements

Department of Hindi has always striven to provide the best to its students to get the best out of them. When Functional Hindi was offered as a Degree course the following were the rank holders in the University of Kerala:

Department Magazine

Department published a trilingual magazine named 'Sagarika'. First issue of the magazine was released by Prof. V. Madhusudanan Nair in June 2003.

Research Activities in the Department

The members of faculty Dr. S. Surendhran Nair is actively engaged in Research activities and they have come out with various research papers and published books. The research deatails are as follows:

Guides of the Department currently guiding Ph.D. scholars

Dr. S. Surendran Nair has been a well sought after research guide in the University of Kerala for over a decade. At present he is guiding 5 Ph.D. Scholars. Through his diligent perusal three scholars have already completed their research work and were awarded Ph.D. by the University of Kerala. They are:

  • Radhika L R (2016)

One Minor Research Project was undertaken successfully by Dr.S.Surendran Nair  in march 2015 with the sponsorship of UGC. More than 100 articles are being published in Hindi and Malayalam Journals by Dr. S. Surendran Nair.

Alumni

Most of the B.A Functional Hindi students were from the coastal area. Some of them became teachers in Aided and Un-aided schools. One student became Hindi translator in a Central government organization in Trivandrum. Many of our students who had taken Hindi as an additional subject during their pre-degree or degree courses are well placed in different walks of life.
