Historical Survey
The Department had its beginning as the Dept. of Biology training students at pre-degree level in zoology as a subsidiary subject. Prof. Jose Antony, Fr. K.T. Augustine, and Fr. Jose Mathew and Prof. Cyril Johnson were the illustrious retired members of faculty of the Department. Their hard work and commitment for decades succeeded in igniting a steady passion for Botany and Zoology among generations of students. The Department of Botany and Biotechnology was established on 3rd January 2000 with Dr Cyril as the Head of the Department. The course offered now is a restructured one with Botany as the core main, Biotechnology as the vocational main and Biochemistry as a complementary subject.
Facilities and Features
The course is designed to develop scientific attitude and interest towards Life sciences. The department trains 32 students at the undergraduate level each year. The programme offered is aimed at developing proficiency in theory, practicals and interpretation of scientific data. The Dept has well established lab facilities which include a Botany lab, a Biotechnology lab, a plant tissue culture lab and a microbiology lab. A beautiful botanical garden with a green house is being maintained by the dept. A zoological museum and a dept library is also functioning.
Activities and Achievements
The Department undertakes degree level academic projects and has a UGC sponsored add-on course on Mushroom cultivation. Students from the dept. constantly excel in university exams and the Dept produced 1st and 2nd university ranks in the year 2003, 1st rank in the year 2012 and 2013.
